Job Summary:
As a Virtual Outpatient Coder in our Health Information Management department, you'll play a vital role in maintaining accurate and complete code assignments for various hospital outpatient encounters. This includes procedures like same-day surgeries, observation visits, wound care, emergency department visits, and diagnostic procedures. This role serves as an excellent entry point for individuals looking to transition from production coding to outpatient coding quality review.
Responsibilities:
- Verify the accuracy of assigned CPT codes, particularly for complex or error-prone procedures.
- Ensure the precision of diagnosis coding for complex or error-prone patient encounters.
- Validate specific discharge dispositions.
- Review discrepancies between charges and procedures.
- Scrutinize codes for compliance with NCD/LCD coverage requirements.
- Identify and address invalid codes, code conflicts, and missing modifiers.
- Collaborate with fellow team members in billing, revenue integrity, and related departments to route or resolve alerts/edits.
- Consolidate codes for payment window encounters.
- Initiate rebills for incorrectly coded encounters.
- Assist in resolving accounts with HIM/Coding unbilled hold reasons to facilitate final billing.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of an Undergraduate (Associate's or Bachelor's) degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Information Technology (HIT) is required.
- At least 1 year of recent hospital experience in outpatient coding and auditing for same-day surgery and acute care.
- Preferred certifications: RHIA, RHIT, or CCS.
- Strong focus on payer-specific quality edits and addressing customer complaints.
- Ideal candidates have experience with ambulatory or hospital acute care coding, including same-day surgeries and outpatient observation visits. This experience may appear on your resume as 23-hour observation or surgical observation stays.
- Prior experience with physician coding (PRO FEE) or ancillary coding (lab) is not equivalent to outpatient coding. Surgical/OBS coding experience and documented billing edit experience are essential.
- We do not consider candidates with HCC/risk adjustment coding backgrounds, physician coders, or individuals whose experience doesn't align with our department's requirements.
- Candidates must have acute care experience and a background working for a hospital system.
- Strong preference for candidates with experience in wound care, interventional radiology, ED, and observation coding.
- Proficiency in technology and experience with multi-systems is crucial, and experience in multi-facility or larger hospitals is a significant advantage.
